Science Curriculum Statement

We believe that all children should have access to a high-quality science education which provides the foundations for understanding the world through biology, chemistry and physics. Our intention is to develop in all children a lifelong curiosity and interest in the sciences. We encourage children to be inquisitive and predict, explore and explain their own findings.

Our science curriculum ensures that children have a varied and progressive sequence of learning that meticulously expresses and realises the science national curriculum for EYFS and KS1 for our school. The key documents below set out the carefully considered vertical curriculum that tracks the progression of substantive and disciplinary learning from EYFS to Year 2. This has been created in line with the national curriculum for science, which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Our curriculum and planning enhances the children’s scientific understanding and knowledge both independently and collaboratively. It enables children to learn through enquiry-based activities along with teacher-directed approaches, adapting science lessons to the pupils’ needs and nurturing positive science-related attitudes, including interest in broad science topics, enjoyment of science, science self-efficacy and participation in science-related extra-curricular activities.

The split focus of building substantive knowledge and developing disciplinary knowledge means that the children cultivate skills in working scientifically as well as their fundamental knowledge, developing a greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer scientific questions.
