PSHE Curriculum Statement

PSHE Curriculum Statement

We aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives children and young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives, both now and in the future.

We believe wholeheartedly in delivering the social and emotional aspects of learning and these are taught weekly to all children in school. Our assembly rota demonstrates the importance of British values and reinforces the themes of our PSHE curriculum.

Our aim is that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, whose values are built upon mutual trust and respect for all.

We feel that this will prepare our children to become respectful citizens in the future and that they will continue to show these same open and positive attitudes towards people they meet, regardless of their social or cultural background.

PSHE lessons are taught through our One Life programme and supplemented by Pol-Ed (West Yorkshire Police education programme). One Life is deeply rooted in recent research and science which explicitly teaches all pupils how to live their ‘one life’ well and correlates with our statutory duty to ensure that every child develops spiritually, morally, socially and culturally. Pol-Ed helps to develop pupils understanding of relationships, risks and the law. One Life is also used at our feeder school, South Dale so in Key Stage 2 children will continue their learning using the same scheme of work.

At the heart of One-Life are the three components: physical, social and mental fitness.

One Life Morning Routine:

Pupils’ personal development and wellbeing is embedded in our daily practice starting with a ‘safe touch’ greeting as pupils enter school. This ensures that every pupil starts the day with a positive adult interaction, releasing oxytocin and building strong connections.

The One Life morning routine is an integral part of our day allowing pupils to take part in journalling activities, mindful minutes and breath work. Pupils ‘talk it out’ building relational connections with their peers and they repeat positive affirmations such as ‘I am loved’ and ‘I can cope with anything!’ This daily structure helps pupils start their day with calm bodies and minds.

Reflection Fridays:

At the end of every week, pupils reflect upon their physical activity, nutrition and sleep. We want pupils to know the benefits and importance of these basics and how to build healthy habits.
