Geography Curriculum Statement

We aim to provide a broad and rich Geography curriculum that encompasses both building a secure knowledge base alongside field skills.

We wish to inspire a curiosity and fascination with this ever-changing planet that we live in.

We track progress from Foundation through to Year 2 to ensure that the correct progression steps are in place so that children can deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes and the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

We have a broad range of geographical topics which act as an inspiring vehicle for our children to apply their skills and deepen their knowledge.

We believe that it is important that many of our topics are relevant and contextual to our children and so we explore the local area and make links with our community wherever possible. This includes Ossett, Green Park and extends to Wakefield.

Topics Covered

EYFS

In Foundation we primarily teach Geography through the area of learning ‘Understanding the World’. We provide our children with opportunities to develop a range of highly transferable skills values and attributes, including: problem-solving, observation, collaboration, open-mindedness, courage, resilience and curiosity. These combine to allow out children to explore, interpret and ‘experience’ the world around them, as well as providing the foundations on which all future learning can be built.

Children are guided to make sense of their physical world and community through a range of personal experiences. They go on a walk round Ossett, looking at landmarks and human and physical features. They explore the school grounds looking at evidence of different seasons over the year. The children draw maps and routes, relating this to their own local Geography. The construction area, both indoor and outdoor, provide a host of opportunities for children to explore Geography through play as they consider place and time within their imagination, allowing them to construct their own individual and collaborative learning stories.
